TWW 09 - Here we go again

I read in an article before going to see the film 'Wrath of the Titans' that Sam Worthington is very harsh on himself, as he hugely criticised his performance in the first of these two films 'Clash of the Titans' he felt he didn't show enough of his character, so going in to watch this film I had that on my mind, as I am a big fan of Sam Worthington, most notably for his performance in Avatar.

In some ways I have to say most of the characters in 'Clash of the Titans' barely had any time to delve into their characteristics or personality and I have to say 'Wrath of the Titans' does not fare must better in this aspect. All it does for me is include more of the high octane adrenaline pumping action that featured in much of the first film, coupled with a lot of special effects and if your an action junkie this would probably about do it for you, it's a good film, but let's leave it at that.

In the gaming world I hear that the Ghost Recon Future Solider beta will be released very shortly and as it happens in the 'near future'. So I guess it's time to dig around for your Splinter Cell Conviction case and find that code!

I find myself looking back six years ago to what I consider the basic standard that all mech games should aspire to, Chromehounds. This is was the ultimate multiplayer game of the time as several people on this website, including me and my brother, used to play and dominate (I think?) on.

TWW 07 - Too little, too late

I think I have now heard just about every story under the sun as this ending to mass effect 3 rambles on and takes a new twist in the tale with Bioware giving in and announcing that there will be add on DLC for an alternative ending, all I can do is laugh and dig up a video of this brave guy, who I should have let kill my character and left it at that.

So this week I have had to pick and analyse a short film clip as one of my university assignments, and as I was doing this it brought a very serious question to me, what is my favourite film clip? I mean I have quite a few, but choosing my all time, all conquering film clip, well that's just a big deal to think about right? I mean I should give this more of a think through than a few days, because even one film can have many great moments in it, but after watching Gladiator the other day all I can get running through my head is Russell Crowe repeatedly shouting 'ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!'.

So yes I did go with a clip from Gladiator as the film was still fresh in my mind to analyse and pick out all the filming techniques from, but I may need a bit of help from you guys to pick out the best moments in films, maybe even do an all time top 10?

For the first time in a few months, I have noticed that there are no games I am really especially looking forward to or waiting on, you the know the kind where I would say straight off the bat, I'm putting my money together to buy that, not since Mass Effect 3 came out anyway. I'm kind of surprised at myself because I would banker on getting Halo 4, maybe because Bungie have left the scene that's left most cautious on where 343 will take the legendary franchise which I had always expected to be on the new Xbox, but since Microsoft had announced they have no plans to bring out a new console as of yet it seems that the Xbox 360 still hasn't been pushed to it's utmost limits.

Speaking of gaming franchises, how do these game developers that keep making Final Fantasy and Resident Evil keep going? I mean they are going to run out of story lines eventually, I actually can't believe the amount of games they manage to create because I don't think I have spoken or found a single Final Fantasy or Resident Evil fan in years. In terms of Final Fantasy they just need to let that game die, admit they went a bit Japanese overboard, and move on. What is it now? The 14th installment? Just kill them all off! Game Over! Capiche? Rant over!

TWW 06 - The Mass Effect 3 Fortnighter - Part 2: Review

To conclude this dedicated week to Mass Effect 3, I have managed to complete the game already to give my perspective and full review of the game (without giving any spoilers away that is!). Bioware managed to pull out all the stops for this sci-fi conclusion to its journey with Commander Shepard, while also outdoing Mass Effect 2 by some distance, which is no mean feat, but (and its a big but) it's as if the writers of the whole trilogy then fell asleep for the last 10 minutes of their finale and handed it over to monkeys who were clueless in any sense of storytelling.

For me, this 10 minutes ruined the whole trilogy, everything I had done up to that point with the choices I had made and paths I wanted to take seemed destroyed by this lack of closure. I have found out I am not alone in the gaming world from this dissapointment from players who have spent well in excess of over 100 hours going through this epic storyline, and it is this epic storyline combined with awe inspiring graphics and gameplay that makes Mass Effect 3 as one of the must buy games of the year, despite my grumblings.

As I started the game I was disappointed that although I could import my character which has gone through Mass Effect 1 and 2, there was a problem with reproducing his iconic face which so looked like me, EA had already decided to start getting on my nerves with that as I thought to myself 'oh its not Biowares fault its EA who runs the servers'. I also commented on a few Mass Effect forums and could not understand people who picked up the series for the first time with Mass Effect 3 straight off the bat, I would recommend to anyone starting off from the beginning to get the full enjoyment and experience of the story (just remember to turn your xbox off 10 minutes from what you think is the end).

(FYI I got it on with Tali, 2 games in a row, damn right!)

I finally got my head out of the sand for some other (The Hunger Games getting me all giddy with excitement at the moment waiting for its release) eagerly anticipated upcoming films and came across another finale in a trilogy which is 'The Dark Knight Rises'. I for one can not fault Christopher Nolans filmaking credentionals having seen the previous two films in his realistic and gritty version of Batman (aka the Dark Knight) and can only hope he picked actors who can perform up the great levels Heath Legder did as the Joker. This is one film I will definitely not be missing this summer!

TWW 05 - The Mass Effect 3 Fortnighter - Part 1: Preview

As the title suggests, yes this space will be filled for the next two weeks with information covering all aspects of Mass Effect 3, and what we can expect from Bioware's last in the trilogy.

I have already gone over the whole installment of Kinnect into Mass Effect 3 in a previous post, so the next biggest thing that Bioware have tentatively delved into is the multiplayer side, which for me they could have done so much more with. Instead they have copied most other shooting games in making their own version of horde with a few twists, such as collecting data or taking out a specific target and so forth.

I am still slightly confused as to why they did not even contemplate going into the online verses mode or develop anything further in terms of story co-op. To me just playing in someone elses storyline with all the different choices they may have made to mine and in terms of the characters still available from previous Mass Effect's (In Trev's case they are all dead because he managed to get them killed) would give a much greater experience of the game overall, seeing what other people have done compared to you and possibly opening up storylines previously uncovered. To me Bioware missed a trick not setting that up.

The Mass Effect 3 multiplayer was available in the demo and gave us an insight into what you could get up to as a group of 4 commando's travelling the galaxy on important missions, while the only enemy we could choose was Cerberus (yes, looks like they are the bad guys now) I am sure there will be plenty more to choose from.

A new addition is that Bioware have looked at the power branching system, something which I noticed in Skyrim (maybe thats where Bioware got the idea from). This allows players to specifically suit their player to their playing style and in my opinion can only entice players into the game further. The weapons you have will also be a lot more customisable than they were in the previous games, allowing streamlined choices to suit what you want your weapon to do, the main thing is your weapon will come out looking a lot different to what it did before.

Something Bioware has been showing us lots of is the iconic Omi-Blade, the bright holographic flaming sword which sprouts from Shepards hand to give out lethal blows to its victims, which suggests that Bioware has worked hard at smoothing out the close quarters combat and just combat movement in general, while Shepard has also discovered how to climb ladders in this Mass Effect (about damn time!).

I noticed this week some new developments on 343's attempt at making (the greatest gaming series) Halo 4, and well I couldn't resist sharing them with you guys so here you are.

TWW 04 - Bad Decisions

Right this week I have spent my time watching Firefly, a series set in the future about a band of people formed together to make a crew on this ship called Serenity (which incidently the name Serenity was used for the naming of the film for this series). These people try to make a living on Serenity by whatever means they can and it was a fantastic series in my opinion, but (and its a big but) why did they only make one?

Why were Fox, the broadcasting company behind the popular series, so quick to shut it down? It could have turned into one of the best television series out there and there were so many more series to make of many storylines they could go into for each character, but no Fox shut it down after only airing 11 of the 14 episodes made and we had to make do with just a 2 hour film a few years later (which was a good film at that) rather than the whole Firefly universe being discovered, all we managed to discover in a sense is one tiny galaxy and that for me is a major disapointment as the show promised so much. I have been trying to think of other shows that have been cut short when they showed good viewing but none stick out as vividly as Firefly if there are any others please let me know.

In other news Game have decided not to stock Mass Effect 3 or other ea games due to their financial plight, and to be honest I don't buy my games from Game so it won't affect me too much, IGN were kind enough to show us why this is...

My featured game that I have been looking at this week is Ghost Recon : Future Soldier and I have to say the amount of time Ubisoft have spent on this title has made me yawn just thinking about it, but I suppose if they make the game to it's potential then that makes up for everything. Here is what the guys at Ubisoft have to show us.

It's kind of what I expected but I think if they really wanted to take a leapt forward then Ubisoft would have produced the next Ghost Recon for the next generation console, as all the graphics for Ghost Recon games seem to be excellent and using the same game engine, correct me if i'm wrong by all means.
